This Month’s Top Ten Facts About Coffee!
We at kaffee haus believe that sharing is caring – so every month we will be sharing ten fun facts about coffee that would make the QI elves weep coffee tears of joy. Here are our top ten coffee facts for the month of May.
1.There are two types of coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica is the most popular, totally seventy percent of the world’s coffee beans.
2.The majority of coffee is produced in Brazil, producing 40% of the world's coffee.
3.Coffee was originally a food and is actually a fruit.
4.Coffee was the first food to be freeze-dried.
5.Coffee was originally called “Qahwah” and is taken from the Yemen term for wine. Our German brothers and sister originally used the English word “Coffee” to describe the great drink before moving onto the French word “Café” and then finally settling on the current German word “Kaffee”.
6.Coffee is the second most popular drink in the world, second only to water.
7.Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, after oil.
8.Generally, coffee is grown within 1,000 miles of the equator, from the Tropic of Cancer in the north, to the Tropic of Capricorn in the south.
9.The world consumes close to 2.25 billion cups of coffee every day with our Dutch brothers and sisters being the world's largest per capita consumer of coffee, averaging 2.4 cups of coffee per person per day.
10.Instant coffee was invented by a man called George Washington in 1910. He was famously quoted as saying “liberty, when it begins to take root, is a coffee plant of rapid growth”
